Gravity Mourns the Passing of Trent Letwiniuk

Trent Letwiniuk
May 21 1977–August 4, 2025

Trent Letwiniuk, one of the owners and directors of Gravity Architecture, died in a motorcycle accident on Monday, August 4th. We are devastated by this tragedy and have been thinking of Trent’s family as they grieve the loss of a loved one who was a husband, son, brother, and uncle.

Trent was a founding partner at Inertia Residential Design in 2006 and of Gravity Architecture in 2014. With his partner and a growing team of professionals, he built the firm to a 26-person strong firm with offices in Calgary and Vancouver. He was a talented designer and draftsperson, but moreover excelled at building client relationships and representing the firm. He deeply cared about our clients’ needs and wants, and championed these throughout the planning, design, and construction processes of their projects. Trent set an example for the team of diligence and accuracy, efficiency, and excellence. He was also constantly thinking about how to make Gravity better at what we do.

We are grateful for the sympathy and thoughtfulness that our colleagues and clients have expressed to us as we have sadly delivered this terrible news over the last week. We are blessed to be a part of such a supportive community. The team at Gravity had the opportunity to gather this week and process Trent’s loss. It was confusing and sad, cathartic and kind, and a tremendous reminder of the support that we have in each other.

Gravity has no choice but to adjust to our new reality. Without Trent representing Gravity as well as he did, we will have to step up and try our best to do this without him. We have the benefit of Trent growing the business development team over the last five years and sharing with them his approach, values, and systems. Stephen Barnecut is now the sole owner and, with the benefit of 26 years working alongside Trent, will continue to pilot our clients’ projects towards success. Only a few years ago, this event may have been devastating for the company. However, under Trent’s co-leadership, the firm has become strong enough to weather a loss of even this magnitude.

We offer our deepest condolences to his wife, Vivian Rocha; his parents, Ray and Lorraine Letwiniuk; his brother, Ryan Letwiniuk, and sister-in-law, Kim Letwiniuk, and his nephews, Eric and Colin Letwiniuk.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 16th, at Eden Brook Funeral Home & Cemetery in Calgary.

Welcome, Reynaldo!

Reynaldo

At Gravity, we believe that the strength of our work lies in the passion and experience of our team. We are thrilled to introduce Reynaldo Nambayan whom we believe exemplifies both! With over 20 years in the architecture industry, Reynaldo brings his creative vision and technical expertise which makes him a strong asset to our production team.

Reynaldo’s journey into architecture began in the Philippines, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Architecture from one of the country’s leading institutions. Inspired at a young age by sketching sessions with his father, Reynaldo developed an early fascination with form and structure and the potential of design.

Over the past two decades, Reynaldo has worked on a wide range of project types, including residential, commercial, industrial, medical, institutional, and religious buildings. His experience ranges from large-scale developments from a variety of countries, such as China and Singapore where he contributed to the Singapore Zoological Garden—as well to commercial and institutional projects across Alberta and British Columbia. Notable Canadian projects include the RMWB Jubilee Centre Renovation in Fort McMurray, Royal Vista Landing in Calgary, and modular and childcare developments in Lake Country, Kelowna, and Calgary.

When asked about his dream project, Reynaldo did not mention anything flashy. Instead, he shared about designing something that modest that blends into everyday life like a community hub that fits in well with its surroundings, built with local materials and strategies that reflect the climate and culture of the area. He believes the success of a project is measured not by scale or recognition, but by the quality of experience it brings to people who use it.

Outside of the office, Reynaldo enjoys sketching and has recently taken up watercolour painting. He also has an interest in car restoration and detailing—a hands-on hobby that speaks to his appreciation for precision and craftsmanship!

We’re excited to have Reynaldo on the team and look forward to seeing the positive impact of his approach on Gravity’s projects.

Welcome John, our new Permits and Contract Administration Coordinator!

John joined Gravity in May 2023 after graduating from the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT). John is passionate about art and design and has maintained numerous creative hobbies that have led him to a career in architecture. His pursuit stemmed from hours spent sketching, drawing and playing Mindcraft. These hobbies allowed John to continuously challenge himself creatively and motivate him to learn new skills that he could use in his both his personal and professional life.

John worked on multiple projects while at SAIT — one including a design for an on-campus building that required his team to complete on a very tight schedule. This focus and solution-seeking mindset does not go unnoticed and his enthusiasm is evident through his work at Gravity.

A couple of John’s favourite projects are our Shaganappi Multi and Emerge Arbour Lake. He is an active Revit user, and enjoys editing and working with Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom in his free time. Whenever John is not utilizing his artistic skillsets, he can be found outside hiking, playing soccer, or learning a new sport!

We are excited to welcome John, and have his creative mindset and fresh perspective be an addition to our team!

She began her architectural career with a specialisation in Architectural Technologies, and joined Gravity after graduating from the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) in 2023. In her spare time, she reads and draws, loving to explore the intersection between art and science. A true knowledge-seeker and an innovative thinker, Julianne is steadily working toward becoming a registered architect and aspires to push the boundaries of residential design, making it more sustainable, accessible, and beautiful. She is also interested in other typologies, such as care home design and supportive design for vulnerable persons. We are thrilled to have Julianne become part of Gravity’s growing family.

Introducing Aivee Gososo, our BC-based Project Manager

In March, while driving around West Kelowna looking at upcoming project sites, we were also on the phone negotiating with Aivee Gososo to join our team. Our portfolio in BC was (and is) growing, and we needed an experienced project manager to help with the workload.

Aivee was bringing over a decade of professional experience with her. Aivee’s portfolio featured an extensive array of project types such as residential, industrial, commercial and institutional. As well, she had strong knowledge and experience in securing municipal/city approvals for different types of development in and around the Lower Mainland.

Aivee is a graduate of the Architecture program at Technological University of the Philippines. Immediately after completing this program, she embarked on her career and worked with one of the sought-after firms in the Philippines. Immersing herself in both architectural design and project management, working with different teams of consultants and engineers for commercial, healthcare and institutional projects.

In 2011, Aivee achieved her professional certification as an Architect in the Philippines. In the same year, she moved to Canada where she started working with MQN Architects in the Okanagan.

Born and raised in Manila, the capital of the Philippines, Aivee missed the liveliness of the big city and decided to move to the Lower Mainland in 2015 where she then worked with Aplin & Martin Consultants as one of the pioneers in the Architectural Department.

Luckily the negotiations went well and Aivee signed up with Gravity as a Project Manager! She’s been spearheading a wide range of Gravity’s BC projects ever since.

In 2013, Maricris graduated from the Master of Architecture program at the University of Calgary. As part of the program, she studied in Barcelona for a semester and took courses in the Netherlands and California. She enjoyed studying in Spain and travelling to neighbouring countries where she experienced the local architecture and design in person.

Gravity Welcomes New Marketing Coordinator Charlotte

Gravity is excited to announce Charlotte Aksenchuk has joined Gravity as our Marketing Coordinator.

Before she joined the team, she held marketing positions in various sectors. She chose a Bachelor of Arts in Communications and Media Studies from the University of Calgary. Throughout her final year and a half of her degree, Charlotte interned at Harvest Builders, a Calgary-based startup tech incubator. She learned and honed her marketing skills under a very experienced team. Since then, she has worked in environmental monitoring, tech, and the architecture industries. The skills she developed in these positions translated well into becoming the Marketing Coordinator for Gravity.

Charlotte moved to Vancouver in the middle of 2021 but continues to enjoy returning to Calgary to visit. She proudly remains a Calgary Flames fan and enjoys watching hockey games with her husband. On rainy days (which are very common now that she lives in Vancouver), she enjoys making breads, desserts, and elaborate meals. On not-so-rainy days, Charlotte can be found outside enjoying the fantastic views of mountains and oceans, or playing a round of golf with her husband!

David Charlton Joins Gravity as an Architectural Technologist

We are excited to announce David Charlton as one of Gravity’s new Architectural Technologists!

David joined Gravity in the middle of 2022 as an Architectural Technologist. Originally from the Lower Mainland area of BC, David moved to Calgary in 2007 and received his BA in Political Science from the University of Calgary in 2014. He then worked in the insurance industry for a year and discovered it wasn’t for him. This decision led him to pursue a career in architecture by getting an Architectural Technologist diploma from the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) in 2018.

David has always been fascinated by architecture and the process of how buildings are constructed. Combined with the idea of having a career that takes designs and makes them into real-world construction, the architecture industry appealed greatly to him.

Prior to joining Gravity, David was at Systemic Architecture Inc, where he worked on various commercial, mixed-use, and multi-family projects. Some of his previous work includes Basecamp Resorts, a resort chain that operates in various mountain towns of Alberta and B.C, and The Shops at Buffalo Run, a multi-building commercial development, in Tsuut'ina Nation, just outside of Calgary. His favourite style of architecture is West Coast Modernism and his favourite architect is Arthur Erikson.

When David is not at work, you can find him participating in a variety of sports, including hockey, hiking, snowboarding, and skateboarding. David also frequently takes his dog, Indiana, on hikes and walks, where he does photography for fun, mostly taking photos of architecture and nature.

We are excited to have David on our team!
