Habitat for Humanity Silver Springs

Gravity is proud to be a part of the Habitat for Humanity team. We worked with Habitat to design this four-building, 32 unit stacked-townhouse project in the community of Silver Springs in northwest Calgary. The units are designed as family housing, each having two levels, three bedrooms, a private entrance, a patio or balcony, and in-suite laundry.

Because Habitat primarily uses volunteers, and these buildings needed to be both economical and buildable, we elected to employ bold forms and angles, while maintaining a clearly residential massing language. Parts of the south wall fold outwards revealing a simple interlocking architectural massing.

One of the design challenges for the site was providing pedestrian connectivity. Previously, there had been no access to Nose Hill Drive from 64th Avenue other than walking around the site via gravel lane. We designed a direct pathway system, in conjunction with a new ramp on the west side of the property, that now connects both of these public routes, as well as the townhouses to the south and future development to the north.
